DERRY, NH: Eugene “Gene” Shirley of Derry, N.H., passed away peacefully Tuesday, October 28, 2014, at Parkland Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family.
Gene was born in Kittanning, Pa., on November 25, 1926. He was a graduate of Kittanning High School. At age 17, he enlisted in the Navy, serving two years in WWII on the USS Xanthus. He then attended New Kensington Business College in New Kensington, Pa. He married his beautiful bride of 60 years, Martha “Hazel” Thompson, on February 14, 1954.
Gene went on to a varied career as a manager of Woolworth, a materials engineer at Piper Aircraft, and a real estate agent. He belonged to the Masonic Temple for 70 years, and he was a lifetime Shriner. An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting, fishing, and storytelling. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Gene is survived by his wife, Hazel; sisters, Sallie McKay of Malvern, Pa., and Betty Harp of Trafford, Pa.; daughter, Sue Luquette of Raymond, N.H.; grandsons, William, Matthew, Brandon, Phillip; and four great-grandchildren.
A private ceremony will be held at New Hampshire State Veterans' Cemetery in Boscawen, N.H. Donations in Gene’s memory may be made to the American Heart Association, 2 Wall St., Manchester, NH 03101.
