Roy P. “Sonny” Scuderi, 84, husband of Anna (Abate) Scuderi of Derry, N.H., formerly of Gloucester, Mass., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 8, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Boston, Mass., on June 22, 1932, son of the late Concetto and Lena (Montagnino) Scuderi.
Roy attended Gloucester Schools and later went on to proudly serve in the United States Navy during the Korean War.
Early in his life, Sonny discovered his true love and passion for cooking and later went on to start a cooking and baking career with his brother-in-law, Mike, in the North End. He continued to pursue his passion and worked at the family owned business, Lena’s Coffee Shop on Washington Street. Sonny then moved on to be a chef at Augustine’s Restaurant in Saugus, Mass., Addison Gilbert Hospital, the Gull Restaurant, and lastly at Flav’s Restaurant in Rockport, Mass., before officially retiring and moving on to Derry, N.H., or as Sonny would say, ”The Sticks.”
Sonny won many awards at the Essex Clam Fest for his famous clam chowder. When he wasn’t cooking he could be found fishing, playing pool and video games with his grandson and singing karaoke, where he was properly known at the “Fisherman.”
Sonny was an old movie buff and there wasn’t a classic he didn’t have in his collection.
He was member of the Gloucester American Legion, Captain Lester S. Wass Post #3 and the Londonderry Senior Center.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him and his cooking legacy will be continued by his family.
